“For thus said the Lord: ‘For nothing you have been sold, And not by money are you redeemed.'” – Isaiah 52:3

That is so perfect.  It’s difficult to add anything to it.

But this is so amazing to me.  A promise of rescue, at the lowest point.  “For nothing you have been sold” he says.  In the midst of hardship we are captives, lower than slaves.  Feeling as if we have no value at all, no control, and in many cases no hope.  But even in the midst of that he says that in just the same way, even though we have nothing he wants, no way to ever pay him back, we will be rescued.

That’s just how he is towards us.  And that’s how life is.  He guards us and rescues us, and not because of any deal we could ever make with him.  People are always surprised when I insist that it’s useless to try to make deals with God.  Our relationship with him is better than that.  We don’t have to bargain.  We can just lay our needs at his feet.  He knows they are real.  And the fulfillment he has in mind for us, that’s just as real.

At church yesterday they were talking about worry.  They mentioned this verse that I love and it really applies here:

“Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.”
